Facilitation

Sue Froggatt Training & Consultancy

How can a facilitator help you?

The majority of membership associations are involved in running meetings with members, volunteers, staff, sponsors and other stakeholders.

If you have an important meeting coming up, with people from a wide variety of backgrounds, with different understandings, interests, objectives, motifs, vulnerabilities and positions, it might be prudent to consider investing in having an external facilitator to keep the meeting productive and on track.

Facilitated meetings will help you to support a group to tackle issues quicker and with greater ease and success because they are more focused.  A facilitator will also lead the event, so everyone else is free to participate.

An impartial facilitator will assist by:

Guiding the flow of discussion to ensure balance and focus

Giving meetings more clarity

Helping participants clarify goals and reach a common understanding of the issues involved

Guiding the group through creative processes like brainstorming to develop new perspectives

Understanding the ‘group dynamics’ so that different perspectives can be better incorporated and meetings are not dominated by individuals or sub-groups

Improving the quality of group teamwork

Motivating the group and bring inspiration by using active engagement to makethe process more dynamic

Helping contributions and solutions to be logically evaluated, which will help with transparency issues

Guiding the flow of discussion to ensure balance and focus

Helping the group achieve its goals

Developing group ownership and commitment to agreed action plans

Helping the group to resolve conflict and dissent

Creating a more responsive organisational structure.

Helping people tackle some of the tougher issues and problems

Creating a safe structure for the group to work

Improving the chance of success because solutions will have wider buy-in

Helping the group review its performance
